I've only just got this (I'm reviewing it for the Guardian), have only read the first 50 pages and obviously can't offer a considered opinion of it in this place. But I'm just chuffed to have a copy in my hands. Posting this, in other words, is nothing more than a nerdy species of boasting, something, evidently, I am not above.
One note: whomever at Harper put that decontextualised Daily Mail quotation (referring, obviously, to the Mars books) on the cover of what is, actually, a scrupulously realised historical novel is asking for trouble. You have to hope they change it come the actual August release.

I suggest that putting reviews of a book on the front cover of its first edition is a marketing mistake.
Comments on the author - OK: the king of high concept SF, a mastersinger of the Space Opera (meistersinger surely?), Britain's No.1 SF writer etc., but a review of the book itself just makes it look /old/. For a first edition nerd like me who will pay the £18+ to get the hardback as soon as possible rather than wait and pay less than half that for a paperback - that's bad.
And I must admit to a modicum of jealousy too - I ordered Galileo's Dream from Amazon some months ago(Nerd, Moi? Guilty. As my row of FEs from Salt to Yellow Blue Tibia prove).
